The law governing building site safety was strengthened by the introduction of European Union regulations at the beginning of 1993.
Such is the scope of the regulations that individuals wishing to claim compensation for personal injury are able to rely upon these for many types of building site accidents.
Some of the most common such accidents are as follows:
- Roof Related Falls
- Crane Accidents
- Scaffolding Accidents
- Non Roof Falls
- Run Over by Operating Equipment
- Lifting Equipment Failure
- Electric Shock
- Trench Collapses
- Fires and Explosion
- Hit by Road Vehicle
- Compressed Gases Accidents
- Welding Accidents
The most commonly used law in relation to building site accidents is the Construction (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1996. These state that the employer must:
- ensure a safe place of work
- ensure a safe means of access to and from the place of work
- prevent falls with specific regulations for work over 2 metres high
- employ physical precautions or provide equipment that will arrest falls
- prevent falls through fragile materials
- erect scaffolding under competent supervision
- protect employees and others from falling objects
